A few days ago, the American star Alyssa Milano published a tweet on her Twitter account, inviting all women who had experienced sexual violence to reply “me too” to her tweet. The tweet went viral and received a lot of responses from all over the world and the simple phrase – “Me too” – has become a trending hashtag, and spread to Facebook and Instagram as well. Women from all over the world have shared their experiences of sexual assault and harassment using the hashtag #MeToo. The campaign has succeeded in shedding light on the phenomenon of harassment and the psychological impact it leaves on those who have been exposed to it.
Nearly 70,000 people have replied to Milano’s tweet, and the #MeToo hashtag has been used more than 1m times in the US, Europe, the Middle East and beyond. The French used #balancetonporc, the Spanish #YoTambien, and in Arab countries the hashtags وأنا_كمان# and وانا_ايضا# were used. Twitter reported that the hashtag was shared nearly a million times in 48 hours. On Facebook, the comments and reactions totalled more than 12m in 24 hours.
