Lebanon 18 June 2018 – Her Excellency, Minister of Interior and Municipalities Raya El Hassan met the delegation composed of EuroMed Feminist Initiative (EFI), the Office of the Ministry of State for Economic Empowerment of Women and Youth (EEWAY) and the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Lebanon. The delegation included the Executive Director of EFI, Boriana Jonnson, the Country Manager for EFI in Lebanon, Laura El Khoury, the International consultant to the National Gender Observatory, Birgitta Holst Alani, the State Counselor for EEWAY, Maya El Khoury and the Project Manager of the EU Delegation in Lebanon, Roula Abbas.
El Khoury: "We were honored to meet with her Excellency, as EFI delegation. Her Excellency was briefed on the projects EFI is implementing in the Middle East on combating Gender-based violence and promoting gender equality through its projects " Combating Violence against Women in the Southern Mediterranean Region - Jordan, Palestine, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria funded by the European Union” and " Strengthening access to protection, participation, and services for women refugees and host communities in Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq, funded by the EU Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis, the EU MADAD Fund”. We also briefed Her Excellency on our projects in Lebanon in the light of the Syrian crisis and its repercussions on the Lebanese society, and on the establishment of the National Gender Observatory hosted at EEWAY in which the Ministry of Interior is represented at the Steering Committee of the Observatory. We requested the support of Her Excellency as a leader in advocating for gender equality and defending women's rights. We also discussed the organization of a round table on Gender Mainstreaming and the National Action Plan 1325, which is being implemented for the first time in Lebanon by all ministries through the National Commission for Lebanese Women who is in charge of monitoring the implementation process.
Her Excellency expressed her interest and support for the projects implemented by the EFI in Lebanon concerning women’s rights, especially the National Gender Observatory, and stressed on the importance of the support and sustainability of the National Gender Observatory , in addition to the importance of coordination among all parties and bodies working in the field of gender equality to achieve the greatest impact and remarkable results.
