Gender Advocacy Group Meeting

29 mar 2022

In the frame of the EU-funded programme "Enhancing women's participation in decision-making and peace-building processes in Syria", two expert meetings took place in December 2019 to discuss a common strategy to address VAWG, bringing together over 40 representatives of 32 Syrian civil society organisations (CSOs).

The process involved over 100 representatives from 80 CSOs, gender and legal experts and representatives of three survivors’ organisations from many different parts in the region, including North-West and North-East Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, Europe and broader.

The outcome of these discussions which spanned over a year-long was the formation of the Gender Advocacy Group with a view to presenting the Common Agenda to international stakeholders and urge decision-makers to examine political solutions to the Syrian armed conflict and address the refugee crises and displacement through gender lenses, as per the recommendations of the Common Agenda. The Gender Advocacy Group works inside and outside Syria to raise awareness through UNSCR 1325 and the Common Agenda. The team consists of feminist activists from different regions in Syria and in the diaspora, as well as members of the Women’s Advisory Board.

This is the fifth, and final meeting for the Advocacy Group wherein the group is evaluating the achievements of the advocacy strategy and developing recommendations. The meeting is mainly focusing on drawing lessons learnt from the past activities and above all brainstorming on possible future activities of the Gender Advocacy Group, based on a joint analysis of the needs per area when it comes to Violence Against Women and following up on the Common Agenda.

The meeting will be held in person and on-line. 10 participants are participating in person respecting the Covid 19 health instructions, while 13 people are joining online.
